Brian Nelson (#98) was pumped. He, and perenial favorite, Jeff Niedeck battled neck and neck. They crested the hill and passed the two mile mark in 12:30. Nelson never let up and gradually pulled away. Niedeck missed his master's course record by about 20 seconds. It was ideal running conditions and there were many hard fought races. Beth Krasemann and Brittany Heninger were side by side at the two mile mark. Heninger pressed on the downhill and maintaned a twenty second advantage for the remaining 8-miles. She succesfully defended her title. The post race cellebration at the Wood Creek Bar & Grill was great. Thank you to the Pub, the Town of Norfolk, the volunteers, and the runners. Results are posted. I took about 73 photos. I will try to post them as soon as possible. 12/4/10

This is the final race in the 2010 USATF-Connecticut Cross-Country Grand Prix and it will act as a tie breaker. There's a little bit more money too! 11/14/10 Diane Burr memorial 5K Flag Run/Walk results from Thomaston, CT are posted. Give me a chance to catch my breath. I've got photos, some history, some commentary, and an idea; coming up.
It was a great day: a great day for running, racing, and having fun. Geoff Nelson had fun. Supported by his athletes, the New Fairfield Coach took off at the start of the first race at Litchfield. The course was fast. There were loads of walkers inspecting the JO courses as Nelson covered the 5K course ahead of the 2010 Open Runner of the Year, Marc Robaczyski. At 36 years of age, Robaczyski is prime, but at 25-years of age, Nelson was red hot. He set a new course record! Guess who's at third. Chris Chisholm is 48-years old and he covered the course in a modest 16:12. I had to dig a little, but in 2009, Athletes Foot/New Balance (now Hitek) brought in an 18-year old woman from Wilton, CT, named Phonex Chumba (Phonex not Phoenix). Chumba set a new women's record of 18:32. Today a forty-one year old mother with two boys, running later in the morning, set a new women's course record. Meredith Remigino took on last week's Sunny Brook champ Sara Belles. Belles shaved 3 minutes off last week's Sunny Brook time. The team competition was stellar. Housatonic, Hartford, Mohegan, Hitek, Team America (-Yeah), Milford, Litchfield, S W sports... Team results will be posted within a day or two. A great turn out: a great day. Thank you.
Age Before Beauty Cross-Country 5K results from Litchfield are posted! 11/9/10 The Sunny Brook XC 5K was the first race in the USATF Cross-Country Grand Prix. There were several Clubs that competed; including, The Hartford Track Club, Hitek, The Litchfield Track Club, The Mohegan Striders, and The Housatonic Road Runners. The following are the scores: Open Men: First- Hartford Track Club (Chisholm, Thramann, Clark, Wise, Renzullo,(Cowles))= 20 points Open Men: Second- Litchfield Track Club (Morrow, C.Mangini, Palmer, J.Mangini, Woodward) = 38 points Open Women: First- Hitek (Belles, Romano, Scannell) = 8 points Open Women: Second- Housatonic (Hiten, Valin, Olive) = 13 points Master Men: First- Hartford Track Club (Chisholm, Thramann. A record turnout. Course records fall. Teams score points and win money. Outstanding! The results for the 9th Annual Sunny Brook Cross-Country 5K are posted. This was race #1 in the USATF-Connecticut State Championship Cross-Country Grand Prix.
Spencer Sass (#126) battled hard with Chris Chisholm (#104). The twenty-seven year age difference may have played a factor...Sara Belles went unchallenged and successfully defended her title. Race #2 in the USATF/CT XCGP is the Age Before Beauty 5K in Litchfield next Sunday, 11/14/10 at 9:30 AM. The Housatonic Road Runners, HiTek (Formerly Athletes Foot-New Balance-HiTek-Athletic Atic), The Litchfield Track Club, The Mohegan Striders, and The Hartford Track Club all performed well. Way Hedding is a bright light from Mohegan (I've always enjoyed his Tie-Dye Collection), as is Alison Hiten (rallying the women) from Housatonic, Sara Belles and the Romanos from HiTek, and so many other faces that I have seen year after year at Sunny Brook. Thank you. I'll post an update on the Team scoring soon as well as the final outcome to the Greystone/Norwest Y Grand Prix Series. 11/6/10 The HTC 8K XC race app is up. The Litchfield Jingle Bell 5K app is up. The Norfolk Pub 10 Mile app is up. View the Application/Race Registration Page.
Eamon Dempsey (#209), four seconds off his course record. Jeff Niedeck (#207), ten seconds off his Masters record. Marge DeMarrais (#205) was a few seconds from the women's course record as she set a new Master's record en route to victory! Five-year old, Tyler Schumacher runs a 29:56... Results from the 10th Annual Ed McGuire Memorial Culligan Cannonball Run 5K are posted.
11/2/10 This Saturday is the Falls Village 5K. Check out the application. Sunday is the Sunny Brook Cross-Country 5K. This the the third race in the Northwest Y/Greystone Grand Prix Series. Scroll down to learn more about the series and the current individual standings. The Sunny Brook XC 5K in Torrington, CT is the first race in the United States Track and Field-Connecticut Association 2010 Cross-Country Grand Prix. There are three XC races in the USATF/CT 2010 XCGP: Sunny Brook on 11/7, Age Before Beauty XC 5K in Litchfield on 11/14, and the HTC XC 8K at the MDC Reservoir in West Hartford on Saturday, 11/20. Prize money is awarded to USATF/CT Clubs. The Clubs must be current and the runners competing for those clubs must be current USATF/CT members. Open men require 5 members to field a team. An additional 2 members may be used for each team as displacements (5/2). Open women require 3/2 members. Master Men (40+ years of age) require 3/2 members. Master Women require 3/2 members. Teams are scored by place. The series scores each race based on the number of teams for each division. The team that scores 1st place is awarded 1 point for every team that they competed against. If there is only one team in a particular division and that team completed the race, they are awared first place and 1 point. If there are three teams; first place is 3 points, second place is 2 points, and 3rd place is 1 point. The points are totaled up between the three races. The 8K acts as a tie breaker. Teams are designated as the 2010 State of Connecticut Cross-Country Champions. 10/31/10 Happy Halloween!
A tight group passed through the two-mile mark in 10:02. It was Mathew Kiplagat who separated himself from an all-star field. Meanwhile, the 2010 women's champion from the Litchfield Hills Road Race was on a mission. Morlicka Mejdoub (from Morocco) cam within 2-seconds of a new women's course record. Anne Curi Preisig set a new women's masters record and stayed just slightly ahead of 13-year old, Jackson Morrow. Jackson set a new age-group record. It was a record setting crowd; doubled over last year. Outstanding!!! Results for the 34th Annual 5-Mile Kent Pumpkin Run are posted.
Pumpkin head ran the entire race with a 20-pound pumpkin on his head. He took a very competitive age-group award!!! That's him, in the back. 10/20/10 For the NVL Invitational, Megan Bobinski beat Caitlyn Forte with a time of 19:30 to 19:52 respectively. That was two and a half weeks ago. Today they ran the same course for the Naugatuck Valley League High School Cross-Country Championship. The times were better and the roles were reversed. Forte lead her Wolcott team to victory. Muad Hrezi won the boys race while Tom Woermer finished second. Woermer lead the Watertown team to victory. Watertown went 2, 3,4, 5 (from 16:05 to 16:19), 14 (at 17:02). That's a tight grouping and they should be a strong contender in the Connecticut State Class Championship. Watch out for Danbury and Northwest Catholic to take it all. Results are posted.
Congratulations to Caitlyn Forte: 2010 Naugatuck Valley League High School XC Champion!
Congratulations to Muad Hrezi: 2010 Naugatuck Valley League High School XC Champion! 10/14/10 Greystone Electronics LLC and the Northwest Y have established a 3-race Grand Prix Series in the Northwest Corner for 2010. Run the Sunny Brook 5K XC on Sunday, November 7th, score some age-grade points, score the 2-race bonus points, get a chance at earning recognition and possibly winning an award. Sex and age don't matter; how well you do for your sex and age based upon international standards enables a reasonable handicap for all runners. 10/6/10 Photos from the Connecticut 2010 Trail Championship are complete. The Race application for the Age Before Beauty 5K XC in Litchfield is available. 10/2/10
Jeff Niedeck (#186) had never run this race. Jim Zoldy (guy in black with orange shades) did it once, ten years ago. Niedeck took out the first mile, which is fairly hilly, in 5:28. Zoldy tried to hang on at 5:49. It was a stellar turn out with many notables and some new kids running some very fast times. Thank you to the Northwest Y, to all the sponsors, volunteers, spectators, and runners. Results for the 27th Annual Highland Lake 10K Road Race are posted. 10/1/10 Results from the Naugatuck Valley League High School Cross-Country Invitational are posted. 9/26/10 Despite the warm temperatures, a good crowd turns out for the 10th Annual Hogs Back Haf-Marathon. How many times has Joshua Adams won? Results are posted. Get ready for the Highland Lake 10K; this Saturday at 10:00 AM!!! 9/24/10
The girls' race had the defending champion, Megan Bobinski, leading from start to finish. A solid effort on a warm autumn day. Bobinski lead Holy Cross to a strong victory over Kennedy. Holy Cross had their top five girls finish in the top nine positions. The boys' race was very exciting. A group of five runners passed the mid point in a tight bunch. With less than a mile to go, Dan Creem (Holy Cross) moved into the lead, stayed relaxed, and showed a solid kick for the victory over Charlie Harris ( Wilby), Bhanuka Mahabamunge (Crosby), and Ezequiel Rodriguez (Crosby). The team competion was tight: Holy Cross scored 42 points, Crosby 43 points and Wilby 50 points. The NVL Invitational is next Friday at Veteran's Park in Watertown. These Schools, along with a few others, will step to the line in another Cross-Country battle. Results from the Waterbury City League High School Cross-Country Championship are posted. 9/19/10
It was a four man race to the last turn, then a hill, 85 meters, and complete separation. A record turnout for a great event. The results for the 7th Annual 5K Classic at the Farmington Valley YMCA of Granby, CT are posted. Photos to come. 9/15/10 Photos from Canaan are posted. Marc Robaczynski is having a fantastic season. A 2:34 Boston, 4-Mile Road Race State Champion, Runner-up at Branford. He has become the quintessential runner. Today: he is the best runner in Connecticut and for the fourth year in a row, the Connecticut State Champion on the Trails.
Carolyn Stocker takes on the big guns and out duals 3-Time Champion, Abby Mahoney, and 2005 Champion, Debbie Livingston. She broke Mahoney's course record from 2009 and she's just a kid.

Jeffrey Townsend (#291) and Spencer Rodgers (Half-naked guy #289) battled neck and neck over this three loop course. Rodgers was in the lead until the last lap, where Townsend made a hard surge with 400 meters to go. With just about 50 meters left, Townsend made a wrong turn. Rodgers eased up as Townsend caught his misstep and sprinted hard to get to the finish. Rodgers' sportsmanship was good to see. Townsend appreciated the gesture. For the spectators, both runners displayed a very exciting race. Congratulations! And congratulations to Katie Sylvain, who traveled all the way down from Hadley, Mass, to take the women's race. Thank you to all the runners, spectators, volunteers, and sponsors for a great event with plenty of expo tables and fine food...Results are posted for the Wellness Day 3.4 Mile Run and 1 Mile Run/Walk at East Haven High School. 7/24/10
A great event. Usually first year events have some minor glitches. Not Thomaston. This was a well organized and well run sprint triathlon. A fantastic venue, out in the country of Thomaston at Nystrom's pond. It was 21-year old, Joshua Sklanka from Watertown, who lead from start to finish! Susan Leigh took the lead on the bike and never looked back. Congratulations to all the competitors, and thank you, to the many volunteers, the race organizers, the spectators, sponsors, and the town of Thomaston. Excellent... Results are posted. 7/21/10 Photos from the HTC Solstice Sprint 5K are posted. Photos from the Pittsfield Green Mile are posted. Photos from the Lake Compounce 5K are posted. 7/18/10 It's back...
The young guns took it out hard. It was hot. It was humid. The old guy took control, was concerned for the kids health, and passed the mile in 5:14. Jeff Niedeck set a new Master's record on his way to victory at the Canaan 5-Mile Road Race. Jeff looked back a couple times during the race and was pretty nervous to see an elite female from Falmouth , Maine, gunning for the top spot. Sheri Piers was solid through the first mile in 5:20 and she has set the new women's record. Piers broke Kate Paddon's record of 29:54 set in 1998. Piers wasn't alone as Shannon McHale finished 5th overall, just over a minute back. It was great to see runners back in Canaan. Congratulations to all the 5-Mile walkers and all the runners who turned out for a hot summer classic. The Canaan 5-Miler is the first of three races designated as the North-West Connecticut Grand Prix. The Highland Lake 10K on 10/2 and the Sunny Brook 5K XC on 11/7 are also part of the 2010 NWCTGP. Thanks to the Northwest Y for putting on a great event. See you there. Results are posted. There will be a bunch of photos over the next few days. Results from the Night of Miles #1 in Litchfield are posted. 7/12/10 July 30, 2006 was the last running of the Canaan 5-Miler...
This photo is July 31, 2005. The half-naked guy in the red shorts is Richard Hunter. Hunter set the course record in 2005 with a time of 26:53. Next to Rich is Angela Brown (#31). Brown won the womens race in a time of 33:10 she also won in 2006 with a 32:13. The guy on the far right with the Litchfield Track Club singlet is Roger Mahieu (30:49). Mahieu was the second master behind Jeff Niedeck (28:09). Jeff is tucked in behind Richard Hunter. Second place overall went to Daniel Barry (#47) in 28:07. Dan won the race in 2006 with a time of 27:27. Next to Dan is Bob Davis (#2). Isabel Gottlieb (#23), Hilary Hamilton (#24), Pete Hawley is between Gottlieb and Hamilton with the black hat, Margaret Banker (#13), Chris Tripler with the shades next to Banker, the other half naked guy is Donny Gleason, and at the far left is Susan Auclair (#19). At 65 years of age, Bill Borla finished 5th overall in a time of 31:25. In 2004, Bobby Dwyer won in 27:49. Angela Brown took 1st in 35:46. Liam Revel has the second fastest time at 26:58, while Kate Paddon has the women's record from 2000 with a 31:02. Back in 2002, after doing the course as a warm-up, I battled with Niedeck and was able to eek out a 30:56. So where are they now? Can Brown continue to defend her streak of women's victories? Huneter has a lot of local course records, at 26 years of age, are his best years behind him? Can Borla still spank the youngsters? Has Dwyer fully recovered from a respectable Litchfield? Can Paddon run 5 miles? We'll find out on Sunday... THE CANAAN 5 MILE ROAD RACE Returns! 7/11/10 Brittany Henninger lead from start to finish at the Hartford Red Dress Run 5K yesterday. Temperatures were high and the humidity oppressive. Henninger passed the mile in 5:45 with about a 50 meter lead over Courtney Robaczynski. Two miles in 12:00 and Robaczynski had closed to within 20 meters. Henninger made the quick turn off Prospect, at the top of the last hill, and pressed her finishing kick into Elizabeth Park. Her time of 18:45 was slower than last year's 3rd place finish, but it was a different course. Congratulations to all the women who ran the Red Dress Run 5K! Results for the Whites Woods Cross-Country Summer Series week #1 and week #2 are posted. Get ready for the Canaan 5-Mile Road Race. It's back! Sunday, July 18th. In 2009, Bridgewater, again, won the Granby 10K in 33:37. Today, David Bridgewater ran through the first mile in 5:17 and immediately shut it down. Bridgewater cruised the remainder of the course and battled with the near 90 degree temperatures. It was a hard fought battle with the elements for what might have been. As she came off the road and on to the last 200 meter stretch in 3rd place overall, the would be first place woman began to loap. Her gate was staggered as she neared the 50 meter mark at 38 high. In an instant; she's down. Emergency response personnel moved swiftly to give aid. It was hot today. With little to no days of acclimation, mother nature will have an accounting, and even the most fit of athletes must respect the sudden change in climate. This is a classic race, a classic course, in a Town where the people recognize athletic feet's of accomplishment. The results for the 2nd oldest road race in Connecticut are posted. 5/1/10 The half-naked guy in the middle owns this race. He set the course record in 2001 with a 25:37. Race #2 in the USATF/CT Road Race Grand Prix saw record attendance and a strong, competitive field. Jeff Wadecki finished 8th here in 2008. That was the same year that David Wishart set the course record. Wadecki was gunning for a new record and he wasn't bashfull about taking the first mile in 5:13. By the half-way point, Wadecki had established nearly a one minute lead over the next runner. The hills, the heat, the humanity. Eddie Gorecki died yesterday at the age of 55. Eddie ran every race in the state of Connecticut. Every race director, every timer, and just about every runner knew him. Edd was a very fast runner in his day. There are not many runners here in Connecticut, nor New England for that matter, that have run a 32:00 10K. According to Ray Wise, Eddie had run in at least 251 races since 2004. I would often talk with Edd before a race. His conversations were as Dennis Barone described. He was soft spoken and would like to sneak up on me in a mummbly voice he'd say my name several times. He would always ask if I was running in the race. When I would say "no", he would look a little disappointed and reply with a, "huh"? I mostly time now, but Edd and I did have some great races together. He was a stalwart for the Hartford Track Club Men's teams. He typically scored in his division for decades and occasionally he would win. He worked hard and very often would have to leave the race venue before collecting his award in order to make it to work on time. I'm told he was recently laid off from work. Edd was a strong guy. He threw himself into running. His conversations always included a perpetual hamstring pull. He ran through the pain. He died doing what he loved. I'ld like to think that he knew that people liked him and that he has a world of friends. Because he had to get to work or another race, Eddie would always come up to me after the race and ask for his own personal copy of the results. I'm going to miss that. I'm going to miss Eddie. He was a good guy. I'll post any funeral announcements as soon as I get them. 11/4/09 Photos from the 8th Annual Sunny Brook Cross-Country are complete. Check them out. Photos will be up during the week. 10/30/09 Race #1, in a three race USATF/CT cross-country series to determine who the best teams and individuals are in the State of Connecticut, takes place on Sunday. In addition to teams winning prize money at each of these races, teams and individuals are also awarded points from each race to determine the 2009 Champion. In 2008 the Hartford Track Club battled the Mohegan Striders and came back from a deficit to win in a tie break in the final race of the season. It pays to show up at every one of these races. They're tough. They're challenging. They are fun. Cross-Country races are serious races; however, they are also more social. A lot of the runners know each other. You see the same familiar faces at each of the three races and there develops a sense of kinship. Despite the fact that the races are competitive, you don't have to be fast. Toe the line just like everybody else. Run your race. Take on the course, the elements, and time. At the end, there will always be a smiling face. A tired and smiling face. Don't be timid about talking to the winner. Ask him or her about their pace. How were they able to conquer the hill? Will they be at the next race? It doesn't matter if you aren't a member of the USATF. This Cross-Country series is open to everyone. Sunny Brook 5K 11/1........Age Before Beauty 5K 11/15........HTC XC Challenge 8K 11/21. So far I've got about 60 preregistered for Suuny Brook. Mohegan and HTC will be there. 10/27/09

In case you missed it, the USTFCCCA (This is NOT the USATF) has posted it's Division 1 Cross-Country Rankings dated Monday, September 14, 2009. This, after several schools have already had several races, is deemed "Preseason". While reviewing the prognostications, I quickly went to the "Northeast Division" for the women. Providence and Syracuse are ranked 1-2. That's predictable. The rest of the teams, 3 through 15, have a long way to go in my opinion to be on the list. I think the coaches from 14th ranked Northeastern, and 12th ranked Yale, would be the first to acknowledge that they were recently beaten soundly by currently unranked UConn and that UConn should be on the list. My estimate is somewhere in the top 5 along with New Hampshire. Time will tell. Let me know what your opinion is and if it's clear, cogent, and concise, I might post it as food for thought. I would welcome the reasoning as to why Yale and Northeastern are ranked after losing to UConn. The ranking was compiled after those losses...It's probably just an honest mistake. There is one way to fix it! 9/13/09 Photos of the women's 5K XC at Fairfield are complete. I'll post the men's 5-Mile race, featuring George Buchanan, over the next few days. Sunday, September 20th is the Granby YMCA 5K Road Race. I'll post the app as soon as I get it... The Open Men consists of 5 scoring athletes and up to 2 additional athlete displacements(5/2). The Open Women (3/2), Masters (40 years and up) Men and Masters Women (3/2 respectively). Masters runners may score for an Open team and a Masters team. Stay tuned for additional details. George Buchanan is ready. At the GrandMaster age of 50, George toes the line in today's Fairfield University Cross-Country Invitational (photo above). Nearly half the college kids learned that they need to put in considerably more effort to keep George within their sight. I would say that all the colleges kids learned to respect your elders, especially when they agree to a 5-Mile Cross-Country Race! Way-to-Go George. Thank you to the Fairfield University and all the people who made the day fun, competitive, and entertaining. I've got about 80 photos from today's Cross-Country Invitational at Fairfield University. Robaczyski pulled away in the second mile with a 5:06 and coasted in for the victory. Camargo ran strong and established a new women's record. Not only did Camargo shatter the old record set by Martha Perkins in 2002, but the second woman in today's race, Malika Mejdoub, was also well under the old mark and not that far behind Camargo. I'll post more shortly. 1/4/09 Despite the reschedule date, the snow, the wind, the ice, and cold, a hardcore group of tough runners took on the challenge of the 10th Annual Norfolk Pub 10-Miler. Brian Nelson (469) lead the charge up the ice covered hill through two miles in 13:00 with master runner, Mark Hixson right behind. At the six-mile mark, Hixson had taken the lead in 35:55 with Nelson seven seconds back. The winds of Loon Brook Mountain struck many a runner down. Hixson and Nelson through caution to the wind as they pushed the pace up and over the top and back down the ice covered ninth mile. Hixson held a strong pace up the last knife-edged escarpment and cruised the final third of a mile to victory, a candy cain, a beer, $50.00, and of course; the classic PEZ. In the women's race, Brittany Heninger paced through the two-mile mark just under 16:00. This was her first race over 10K and she managed the snow covered roads, the debilitating hills, and the challenging distance very well. Heninger took the victory and made the Women's Top Ten List of Fastest Times, while Cheryl Cunningham was closing for a new women's Grand Master Record. Congratulations to all the runners at Norfolk and thank you to all the volunteers. You made this a very fun event! A new course record with a record field at the 14th Annual Framingham Thanksgiving Day Classic 5K Road Race. Results are posted. 11/26/08
Happy Thanksgiving! Congratulations to the Hartford Track Club Men's Open and Master's Cross-Country Teams. They are the 2008 State of Connecticut Cross-Country Team Champions. It was a hard fought competition that came down to the very last race, The HTC's 8K Cross-Country Challenge. The Hartford Track Club was first in the Men's Open with 26 points and The Mohegan Striders had 29 points. In the Masters competition, both Hartford and Mohegan tied with 12 points each. Athletes Feet/New Balance had 26 points. The tie break is decided by which team's last scoring member finished closer to first place. HTC's third man was 6th while Mohegan's third man was 7th. For the overall 2008 Team Title, the 8K race was the tie breaking race. Both HTC and Mohegan tied in the overall year-end standing for Open and Masters team competition. Whoever finished closer to first as a team in the 8K would have the advantage. There was no women 2008 Team Champion. For the individual 2008 Cross-Country Outstanding Performances: Open Women's Champion Title goes to Brittany Heninger from the Woodbridge Running Company Open Men Champion Title goes to Patrick Swift from the Mohegan Striders Master Women Champion Title goes to Elaine Romano from Athletes Foot/ New Balance Master Men Champion Title goes to Patrick Swift from the Mohegan Striders Grand Master Women Champion Title goes to Elaine Romano from Athletes Foot/ New Balance Grand Master Men Champion Title goes to Peter Hawley from the Hartford Track Club Congratulations to all the 2008 Team and Individual State of Connecticut Cross-Country Champions. Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2008 XCGP. I look forward to seeing you next year. The award for Best Racing Shirt Collection goes to Way Hedding from the Mohegan Striders! 11/22/08
Sometimes you
fall.a In Cross-Country, falling can happen at the most inopportune
time. When you fall, get up, finish the race, and sometimes you
will win... That's what happened to 43-year old Mark Hixson from
Simsbury. Mark not only won, but he lead the Hartford Track Club
Men to an Open and a Masters team victory. For the women, Brittany Heninger took the lead early. Beth Kraseman took control just before the 2-mile mark and continued to pull away for a solid victory. Results for the 9th Annual Hartford Track Club 8K Cross-Country Challenge are posted. This was the third and final race in the USATF/CT XC Grand Prix. I will have team scores and a whole bunch of photos posted within a few days.
11/18/08 The USATF/CT Junior Olympic XC results are posted. Photos from the Age Before Beauty 5k Cross-Country Race are posted. This was race #2 in the USATF/CT XC Grand Prix. In the Mens Open; Athlete Foot/ New Balance was 1st with 20 points, Hartford Track Club 2nd with 43 points, and the Mohegan Striders 3rd with 61 points. In the Men's Master competition; AFNB was 1st with 8 points, HTC 2nd with 16 points and Mohegan 3rd with 24 points. Hartford Track Club took 1st place in the Women's open and masters competition. The third and final race in the USATF/Connecticut Cross-Country Grand Prix Series is this Saturday at 10:00 AM in West Hartford. Download an app. The race is open to everyone. After two races the series stands at: Open Men Mohegan Striders 1 + 1 = 2 Athletes Foot/New Balance 0 + 2 = 2 Hartford Track Club 0 + 1.5 = 1.5 Master Men Mohegan 1 + 1 = 2 Athletes Foot/New Balance 0 + 2 = 2 Hartford Track Club 0 + 1.5 = 1.5 Open Women Hartford Track Club 0 + 1 = 1 Master Women Hartford Track Club 0 + 1 = 1 The 2008 USATF/CT Team Championship Title will be decided this Saturday at the Hartford Track Club's 8K Cross-Country Challange. The individual standings show Patrick Swift from the Mohegan Striders as the strong contender for both the Open and Master's 2008 Men's State Champion. While Brittany Heninger from the Woodbridge Running Company looks like a shoe in...for the Open 2008 Women's State Champion, defending master's champion, Cheryl Cunningham from the Hartford Track Club might have a shot at a repeat for 2008. The big question is, what shirt will Way Hedding be wearing for this Grand Finale? 11/16/08 Cross-Country Season is in full gear. There's one more USATF/CT XC Grand Prix event.
John Citrelli lead the race from start to finish. He missed the course record by 1 second. The Athletes Foot/New Balance Team edges the Hartford Track Club in both the open and masters men team competition. Despite running 3.5 miles, Brittany Henninger lead the women's race while the Hartford Track Club women took both open and masters team competitions.

Former Hog Champion, Josh Adams lead Jeffrey McDermott through 1-Mile in 5:30. McDermott took the lead at four and lead Adams by about 30 seconds through 5 in 29:30. Adams maintaned contact through 10 but McDermott had some gas left in the tank to pull out the victory. Meanwhile, the women played musical chairs through the first seven miles. It was the 2008 People's Forest Connecticut Trail State Champion, Tracey Dickey, who seperated herself from the rotation. Dickey held the victory as the 2007 Trail State Champion, Cheryl Cunningham, was pressing a final surge. Fred Hudak continues to have a superlative running season with a solid victory in the 60+ division. Great turnout for what turned out to be a fairly dry day. This was the first year for the Hartford Track Club as acting race director. Good job. Thank you to all the volunteers, Anola for the t-shirt design, Kelly for the home-made food, and HTC Race Director Paul Wai. I like the Hog Trophy! Results and photos are posted. 9/26/08

Wether you are a beginner, a once-in-a-while jogger, or a grizzled veteran; it still seems relevant today.
So you have done all the proper training, you've read all the right books, studied all the race archives, and put in the hours of dedication required to reach your target race goal. The big day arrives. No aches, no pains; you're rested and well prepared to take on the challenge. The gun goes off and shortly thereafter you realize that the race you've spent all this time targeting is quickly turning out to be a disaster.A spectacular masterpiece of lost time, shattered dreams, and a performance that leaves you in a great depression. Just as every runner has his day, every runner will experience a bad day. Some runners experience the bad day more than others. And sometimes the bad day is just too overwhelming to shake off.Life isn't all candy and roses and learning how to cope with a bad race is strictly something that requires on the job training. There is no quick and easy answer in how to cope with the pain, anxiety, and disappointments that come with a bad race. Establish an action plan. When you find yourself adrift in the throws of a tough performance, set some very short and specific goals (i.e. Run to the next telephone pole, walk to the next telephone pole, then run the next telephone pole).Once into your recovery plan, try a gradual expansion of the plan (i.e. walk one telephone pole leg then run the next two legs, then the next three, etc.).The point of this exercise is to not give up and to get your head back into the race.Unless faced with injury, finishing the race under such adverse conditions can become a bright spot in the aftermath. It's very painful getting a ride back to the finish. Running is a fine line between composure and breakdown.Once the athlete is in good physical condition, running the race becomes nearly a ninety percent psychological effort.Every runner has his or her own way of coping with the anxiety prior to the race. Some runners are very talkative during their warm up period. Some runners become very quite and distant as they begin to focus on the task at hand.A certain level of confidence is mandatory. Many runners spend time in distress and doubt prior to the gun.For some of these runners, this has become their way of coping.Going into the race with less than great expectations is their way of relieving the tension and avoiding disappointment in a mediocre performance. I believe that a runner that has made the effort, demonstrated a forward
progression, and is clear and free of injury, should expect great things! When
the great things don't materialize and the performance actually regresses,
the athlete needs to try to take some positive thoughts away from the
performance, no matter how bad it was. This is how the athlete can begin
recovery. This is how you can break out of the depression.Take time (a
half day for every bad mile). The grieving process takes time. It's perfectly
normal to be down after a bad race.Try not to let it linger.Your friends
will appreciate your depression and like you a lot better if you try
to stay upbeat. Get yourself up and training again for a different distance,
a new target race with adjusted goals, and remember that one bad race
does not mean that you are a bad runner. This is how you become a veteran
runner. This is how you succeed at life. 7/18/08 It was a busy week in Litchfield. The Night of Miles was Tuesday and the XC Series was Thursday.
