Race #3

12/1/07

Litchfield Jingle Bell 5k

Litchfield Intermediate School on Plumb Hill Rd. (across from the High School)

12:00 PM

Adjusted course in 2004. A classic 5K with a respectable turnout of over 250 runners in a wide variety of age-groups. The start (elev.905') is located about 1/4 mile from the registration area on White Woods Rd. The first 800 meter is track flat with a left onto Milton (Constitution) Rd then another left onto Plumb Hill. Climb 200 meters up Plumb Hill (elev.960') and pass the Registration/Finish area located at the Intermediate School. People are cheering and the Christmass Costume Division is a lot of Fun. Proceed down the backside of Plumb Hill past the 1-mile mark and dump out onto White Woods Rd. Go right up a long flat, straight of White Woods and bare right at the triangle onto Bissell Rd. This is a constant shaded area where the asphault can be a little slick. Take a quick left onto Mattatuck Rd. Mattatuck is a flat access road into the White Memorial Conservation area (elev.900'). It's gravel and when there is snow, ice, or mud, the footing may have ruts and can be tricky. Take a quick left onto a foot path over the Chickadee Bridge. This is a narrow section of the course and the 2-mile mark islocated just beyond the exit of the bridge. Bare left through a pine grove with soft neddles and a one lane track. This section of the course is located on the fifth mile of the Litchfield Hills Road Race in June. Take a rising left hand turn onto White Woods Road and head back to the finish. The section of White Woods Rd in the third mile is flat and straight. You will get to see the runners heading out and this is the section of the race where your concentration makes a significant difference in your finish time. Take a left up Plumb Hill Rd. This is the last hill. The hill is a moderate 200 meter challenge at toward the end of the race. Peak at the top and start a hard 200 meter kick down into the parking lot in front of the Main Doors of the Intermediate School (elev.950').(860)567-7569

16th Annual Milton Resolution Road Race

S/F/R at Milton-Litchfield, Town Hall, Milton Rd

12:00 PM

It's a 4.8 miler with a lot of fun. Yes, the course measures out to be about 8K, but it still runs like a tough 5 miler. The start is 600 meters up a gravel road just off the green. Tricky footing with ice, snow, and ruts. Left in front of the Town Hall on to pavement and a couple short rollers then a 600 meter flat through the mile and bear left with a slight climb, then right to a long 800 meter gradual down hill. Once at the bottom you begin to hit the hills at 1.9 miles. Pass the cemetary on your right and the 2-mile mark. Once at the top of the 400 meter hill , bear left for a couple short rollers to 2.3 miles. At 2.3 you climb another 400 meter hill with open fields on both sides. Wind can be a factor at the half way mark where warm cider is served. Once past the half the view of runners trailing up the next hill is daunting. At 2.75 there is a 600 meter hill (the most challenging on the course). Pass the 3-mile mark near the top of the hill and take a left turn up a short sharp hill and then down into a flat 800 meter stretch along a ridge line with wind tunnell buffeting. With less than 2K to go, should you be drafting or making a move? The 4-mile mark comes on a slight rise at the end of the wind tunnell stretch. there is about 200 meters of paved road and the a quick left onto gravel and a steep downhill. This is Potash Rd. Plenty of ice, rocks, ruts, and screaming around the 90 degree right hand turn. The gravel bottoms out onto Milton Rd with about 150 meters to kick to the finish line. The last mile is short; hence 4.9 miles. Contact Litchfield Parks and Rec at 567-7569

Bob Andrulis Memorial 5 Mile Run

Litchfield Community Center Route 202, Litchfield

11:00 AM

This is the fourth year for this event. Last year had a fantastic turnout. The Registration is inside the Community Center. The Start and Finish are located just outside in the parking lot. The race proceeds to the back of the parking lot where we run over the snow and into a cul de sac. We proceed west on a flat straight for about 600 meters and then reach a dead end where the runners run some cross-country for about 600 meters. This cross-country section is tricky and footing can be tough depending on the snow. It is flat. once through the cross-country, we cross pavement and run up the gravel road hill into White Memorial. This is the only hill on the course. I estimate the Stone pillars to be about 1 mile. Through White Memorial and back on to pavement as you take a right and proceed counter-clockwise around the triangle onto Elaine White Woods Rd. Run up the highwaystretch of EWW Rd. to the base of Plumb Hill Rd. Turn around just past Plumb Hill Rd and run all the way back. This section is kind of fun because you get a chance to see how all the runners ahead and behind are doing. Take a righ at the triangle and stay on the pavement until you come to the cross-country section. Head right back to the start the same way you came out. Excellent food and post race activity at the Community Center. Download App

Colchester Half Marathon

Bacon Academy, Colchester

10:00 AM

Though I have never run this race, I have timed it for a number of years. I have managed to get a run out to the 9-mile mark and back to the finish. The last 4 miles are pretty reasonable. There is some gravel road past farm country and the last 2-3 miles is on a main road stretch with a few, long climbs. There has always been a good turnout and a fantastic post race party. The race excepts a $2.00 entry fee along with any other donations that you wish to makeon race day. Race director, Rick Konon, does a great job over a challenging course (860)537-4597.

Amherst 10-Miler

Amherst, MA

This is a certified course that has been around for a long time. In the past, this race has been part of the USATF/NE road race grand prix. It is currently part of the Hockomock Swamp Rat Grand Pricks Series. The race start in the drive way of the Amherst High School and proceed North-East of town. The first mile has some short, sharp climbs, the 2nd mile is downhill, the 3rd mile is straight and flat with a sudden, steep, climb at the tail end. The fourth mile switches to gravel road with snow, ice, mud, ruts, and is mostly flat. The fith and sixth are rolling pavement. The 7th is rolling to downhill. The eighth rejoins the outward route and is mainly the flat straight with open fields on both sides. Wind can be a factor in this open stretch going out and coming in. The 9th is a steady climb. The tenth is a climb up, then down, then up to 9.7. At 9.7 you have reached the top of the hills and as you look down to your left you can see the parking lot of the intermediate school and the finish line. There is a 150 meter downhill and then a sharp left turn into the drive way. Watch for ice and sand. Take another downhill turn into the upper parking lot and continue your sprint to the end of the parking lot where you will take a sharp 180 degree turn in to the lower side of the parking lot and sprint another 70 meters to the finish line. Pizza post. Strong competition on a moderately hilly course.

The Polar Bear 7.6 Miler

New Preston

11:00 AM

The non-certified course starts near the driveway to the Waramaug Country Club. The first three miles are flat with several curves around the lake. The course takes a left turn onto route 45 and heads north into a strong head wind. In year's past, sand in the eyes was a problem. The mark for the fourth mile is long, the hiway section is monotonous, so don't be dismayed by a slow split. The fifth and sixth miles offer a few short hills in wind protected areas with plenty of curves. The seventh mile runs past the state park and is basically flat. Once past the park area, start an extended 1 kilometer kick. The finish is on a blind right hand curve. Start your kick early because you won't have time to kick once you see the finish. Key points in this flat and fast course are, wind on route 45, have some gas in the tank for the short hills on the backside, and run all the tangents. (860)354-9191
